Sundown Towns
Uncovering a hidden chapter of American history, Richard Loewen examines the phenomenon of sundown towns--communities that restricted the rights of African Americans either through violence or legislation. Many of these towns, usually in the North, actually posted signs warning African Americans not to be found in the town after dark. Loewen`s history identifies a time period from 1890 through 1940, the Nadir, in which African Americans lost ground, suffering greatly through a series of systemic deprivations. The movement of people to the cities in large numbers, often called the Great Migration by historians, is explained by Loewen`s research: people`s lives were endangered on a large scale, american airline lost and found and they had few options. Loewen provides examples of town after town where violence was used or where laws were established restricting people`s rights, american airline lost and found and he shows how communities actually used the idea that they were all white to attract more whites. He cites case after case of lynchings, burnings, american airline lost and found and beatings, some by mobs, others clearly sanctioned by authorities. In some cases, African Americans were simply expelled. He includes maps, charts, american airline lost and found and tables to illustrate american airline lost and found and support his findings. And he explains how these methods were used first against Chinese people in California, american airline lost and found and later against Hispanic arrivals in America`s suburbs. SUNDOWN TOWNS provides a new way of looking at the way our cities were populated american airline lost and found and at the growth of the suburbs. As he did in his earlier LIES MY TEACHER TOLD ME, historian Loewen offers an unsettling but enlightening view of the history we share. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Bestselling historian american airline lost and found and two-time Pulitzer winner McCullough follows up John Adams by staying with America's founding, focusing on a year rather than an individual: a momentous 12 months in the fight for independence. How did a group of ragtag farmers defeat the world's greatest empire? As McCullough vividly shows, they did it with a great deal of suffering, determination, ingenuity-and, the author notes, luck. Although brief by McCullough's standards, this is a narrative tour de force, exhibiting all the hallmarks the author is known for: fascinating subject matter, expert research american airline lost and found and detailed, graceful prose. Throughout, McCullough deftly captures both sides of the conflict. The British commander, Lord General Howe, perhaps not fully accepting that the rebellion could succeed, underestimated the Americans' ingenuity. In turn, the outclassed Americans used the cover of night, surprise american airline lost and found and an abiding hunger for victory to astonishing effect. Henry Knox, for example, trekked 300 miles each way over harsh winter terrain to bring 120,000 pounds of artillery from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston, enabling the Americans, in a stealthy nighttime advance, to seize Dorchester Heights, thus winning the whole city. Luck, McCullough writes, also played into the American cause-a vicious winter storm, for example, stalled a British counterattack at Boston, american airline lost and found and twice Washington staged improbable, daring escapes when the war could have been lost. Similarly, McCullough says, the cruel northeaster in which Washington's troops famously crossed the Delaware was both a blessing american airline lost and found and a curse. McCullough keenly renders the harshness of the elements, the rampant disease american airline lost and found and the constant supply shortfalls, from gunpowder to food, that affected morale on both sides-and it certainly didn't help the British that it took six weeks to relay news to american airline lost and found and from London. Simply put, this is history writing at its best from one of its top practitioners. Copyright 2005 Publishers Weekly. Copyright (C) Muz
